The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mrs. Kemi Nandap, has temporarily relieved the commanding officers of all affected commands along the Lagos-Seme border corridor of their duties.
The decisive action follows widespread online reports and viral videos alleging extortion and harassment of travellers and traders by personnel of the Service at the border.
In a statement issued today, Mrs. Nandap unequivocally condemned the alleged misconduct, describing it as “unacceptable and in direct violation of the core values, ethics, and operational standards of the Service.”
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration,” the Comptroller-General stated. “We are committed to providing professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit and will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service.”
Mrs. Nandap has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations to identify all officers involved, with appropriate disciplinary measures to be applied without delay.
The Lagos-Seme border, a major gateway linking Nigeria to the Republic of Benin and handling significant commercial and passenger traffic, has long been a focal point for public complaints regarding unprofessional conduct by security operatives. The Service views these latest reports with utmost seriousness and reiterates its zero-tolerance stance against any form of corruption or extortion.
The Nigeria Immigration Service assures the public of its commitment to restoring and maintaining the highest standards of service delivery at the border.
