Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yul Edochie has sparked fresh political debate, stating that former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi cannot become President of Nigeria at this time.
In a statement shared via his official social media platforms, Edochie acknowledged Obi’s popularity, particularly among young Nigerians, but argued that prevailing political structures, regional dynamics, and the current balance of power make an Obi presidency unrealistic in the immediate term.
“Peter Obi is a respected leader with a strong followership, but the hard truth is that he cannot be president now,” Edochie said. “The political equation in Nigeria today does not favor him. Beyond the online noise, the ground game tells a different story.”
Edochie, who has previously expressed support for Obi during the 2023 election cycle, did not dismiss the LP leader’s future prospects entirely. However, he urged Obi’s supporters commonly known as ‘Obidients’ to adopt a more strategic and long-term approach rather than expecting an imminent breakthrough.
The actor’s remarks have drawn mixed reactions, with some critics accusing him of betrayal and others agreeing that Nigeria’s political reality requires broader coalition-building. As of press time, Peter Obi and his media team had not issued an official response to Edochie’s comments.
Edochie concluded by calling for “practical solutions over emotional movements,” emphasizing that leadership change in Nigeria would require restructuring the existing political system, not just social media momentum.
