Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has firmly addressed recent online criticism and speculation regarding his personal friendship with Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while distancing himself from any association with the so-called “City Boys” group.
In a direct response to critics on social media following his recent comments on insecurity and governance challenges in Nigeria, Davido stated unequivocally that he is not part of any political or social clique.
“I no dey part of any city boy group,” the singer wrote. “I’ve been friends with ST for years and that’s where it stops, and I call and complain to him all the time, even in person.”
The clarification comes after some social media users accused the artist of hypocrisy, suggesting his long-standing friendship with Seyi Tinubu prevented him from genuinely criticizing national issues. Davido pushed back against these claims, emphasizing that his personal relationships do not silence his voice on matters affecting Nigerians.
The award-winning musician also referenced past instances where he faced backlash for speaking out about Nigeria’s challenges during international interviews, underscoring his commitment to using his platform responsibly.
Davido’s statement has sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many applauding his transparency while others continue to debate the intersection of celebrity, friendship, and political commentary in Nigeria.
