Mr. Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, has officially named Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate, pledging that he will serve as a full and equal partner in governance rather than a ceremonial “spare tyre.”
Speaking during the acceptance of his party’s nomination, Obi emphasized his commitment to building an inclusive and functional democracy where the Vice President plays an active role in national development.
“The government we intend to form will no longer be a government where anybody will say that the Vice President is a spare tyre,” Obi declared. “The Vice President will be a partner because we want to build a nation where there are two equal people who work for the greatness of the country.”
“I will make democracy work and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tyre. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as my Vice President.”
The announcement marks a significant political alliance between the former Anambra State Governor and the former Kano State Governor, bringing together strong support bases from different regions of the country. Obi described the partnership as essential for addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic recovery, security, and youth empowerment.
This development has generated widespread reactions across the political landscape, with analysts viewing the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a formidable opposition force ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
