The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally adopted Alhaji Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, as its governorship candidate for the 2027 general elections.

This announcement follows wide consultations and a consensus decision led by the Kwankwasiyya movement and key stakeholders within the NDC in Kano State. Gwarzo, a seasoned politician and loyal ally of Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is widely regarded for his competence, integrity, and commitment to good governance.

Alhaji Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo served as Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2023 until his resignation in March 2026. His emergence as the candidate is seen as a strategic move to consolidate opposition forces and present a strong, united front capable of delivering meaningful development to the people of Kano.

Speaking after the announcement, Alhaji Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo expressed gratitude and determination: “I am deeply honoured by this confidence reposed in me by our leader, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the good people of Kano State. This is not about personal ambition but about service and rescuing our dear state from misgovernance. With unity and the support of all progressive forces under the NDC, we shall restore Kano to its rightful place as a model of development and prosperity.”

Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a frontline leader of the NDC, described the choice as one based on equity, loyalty, experience, and capacity to win the election convincingly. He also noted that Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna has been positioned for the Kano Central Senatorial District to ensure balanced representation.

The NDC expressed confidence that Gwarzo’s candidacy will galvanize massive support across Kano’s 44 local government areas, positioning the party strongly ahead of the 2027 polls.
