House of Representatives aspirants on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in collaboration with members of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), have issued a strong warning that no leader, including a potential President Peter Obi, will be above accountability.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the aspirants emphasized that every government must serve the people and remain subject to democratic checks, including removal from office if it fails to deliver on expectations.
“Every government must be held accountable, including a Peter Obi presidency. By the time he comes on board and fails to do the bidding of the Nigerian people, he will be disengaged,” said Nnamdi Iroegbu, NDC aspirant for Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency, Imo State.
The aspirants backed a potential Obi-Kwankwaso presidential ticket, describing the alliance as a powerful North-South coalition capable of rescuing Nigeria from decades of division, economic hardship, insecurity, and poor governance.
Akor Christian Oche, National Youth Leader of COPDEM, stated: “Gladly, our consensus candidate, Peter Obi, has joined the NDC. Obi didn’t just join; he came with Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso and the entire Kwankwasiyya Movement. This is a good combination for Nigerians… This coalition of the O-K Movement, a marriage between the North and South, is indeed a welcome development.”
The event, themed “Rescue Nigeria: Consolidating Hope, Building a New Beginning,” highlighted the group’s commitment to building a people-oriented opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections. Aspirants pledged to ensure a more accountable 11th National Assembly that prioritizes service to Nigerians over personal or establishment interests.
Gambari Ismaila, aspirant for Bwari Constituency in the Federal Capital Territory, declared: “This is a national awakening… We are building a movement, a massive, unstoppable national movement, that cuts across ethnicity, religion and region. A movement powered by justice, equity, security and shared prosperity.”
The aspirants also reaffirmed their resolve for credible elections in 2027, warning against any manipulation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) or the ruling party.
They paid tribute to the founder and National Leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, for providing a viable platform for this new political movement.
