PSG Retain Champions League Crown with Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory over Arsenal in Budapest

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title, defeating Arsenal 1-1 (4-3 on penalties) in a tense and thrilling final at the Puskás Aréna.


In front of a capacity crowd of 65,000 passionate fans, the two European powerhouses delivered a high-stakes contest that ended with PSG lifting the famous trophy for the second consecutive year.


The match began with Arsenal taking an early lead through a clinical strike from Bukayo Saka in the 22nd minute. PSG responded with characteristic attacking flair, equalizing in the 67th minute when Ousmane Dembélé rounded off a swift counter-attack with a composed finish. Despite numerous opportunities for both sides in a tightly contested second half and extra time, neither team could find a decisive winner, sending the final to penalties.


In the shootout, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerged as the hero, producing two crucial saves to secure victory. Captain Marquinhos converted the decisive penalty, sparking wild celebrations among the Parisian players and supporters.


"This is an incredible achievement for the club, the players, and our fans," said PSG Head Coach Luis Enrique. "To retain this title is never easy. Arsenal are a fantastic team with incredible quality they pushed us to the limit tonight. But our character, our unity, and our belief carried us through. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed pride in his side’s performance despite the defeat: "We gave everything tonight. The players showed incredible heart and played with tremendous courage. Unfortunately, it came down to penalties, and that’s a lottery. Congratulations to PSG they are worthy champions."


The victory marks PSG’s second successive Champions League triumph and cements their status as the dominant force in European football. The Parisians now join an elite group of clubs to have retained the title in the modern era.



The trophy presentation was conducted by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, who praised both clubs for delivering "a final worthy of the competition’s prestige."


Paris Saint-Germain will now look to celebrate with their supporters before turning their attention to the upcoming Club World Cup.
