England secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over DR Congo in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, advancing to the last 16 where they will face Mexico. Captain Harry Kane delivered a heroic brace in the second half to rescue the Three Lions after an early scare.

DR Congo took a shock lead in the 7th minute through Brian Cipenga, but England responded strongly after the break. Substitute Anthony Gordon provided two crucial assists as Kane equalized with a header in the 75th minute and fired home the winner in the 86th minute.

The win, though hard-fought against a resilient and well-organized DR Congo side, keeps England’s World Cup campaign alive. Manager Thomas Tuchel’s team showed character and attacking quality in the latter stages, with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the defensive unit also playing key roles in holding firm.

“We showed real resilience today,” Kane said post-match. “It wasn’t our best performance for the full 90 minutes, but the boys never gave up. This is what the World Cup is about  fighting until the end. We’re delighted to go through and now focus on Mexico.”

England topped their group unbeaten and now look ahead to a Round of 16 clash against Mexico at the iconic Azteca Stadium on July 6.

The Football Association (The FA) congratulated the team on a hard-earned progression and thanked the England supporters who created an electric atmosphere in Atlanta.
