The Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has condemned in the strongest possible terms the ongoing xenophobic or Afro-phobic attacks targeting Nigerian nationals and other African migrants in has evacuated over 1,490 of its citizens in multiple batches amid escalating violence, looting of businesses, and loss of lives. The Federal Government remains vigilant and prepared to take all necessary measures to protect its nationals.
Speaking at the 69th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Freetown, Sierra Leone, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, called on African leaders to present a united front against these acts of intolerance. President Tinubu urged that the matter be formally tabled before the African Union (AU) for collective action.
“Nigeria condemns, in the strongest terms, the recent attacks on its citizens and other Africans in the Republic of South Africa,” the statement emphasized. “This type of intolerance is totally unacceptable under any guise. South Africa should be reminded that the freedom it currently enjoys is the result of the sacrifices and liberation efforts of African countries, including Nigeria.”
The Nigerian Government has consistently called for the arrest and prosecution of perpetrators, full investigations into reported killings, and written assurances for the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals. It views these attacks as a threat not only to bilateral relations but to the broader ideals of African solidarity, unity, and integration. reiterates its commitment to peaceful diplomatic engagement while demanding that South Africa uphold its responsibilities as a member of the African community.
The Government calls on the African Union to urgently address this continental challenge through appropriate mechanisms, including stronger early warning systems and accountability frameworks to prevent future occurrences.
