Nigeria and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed and strengthened their bilateral security partnership, with a renewed focus on countering terrorism, terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other emerging transnational threats.

This commitment was highlighted during the 4th UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership (SDP4) Dialogue held in Abuja, where senior officials from both nations reviewed existing frameworks and adopted a comprehensive agenda to enhance cooperation through 2026 and beyond.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, described the partnership as a vital strategic framework encompassing counterterrorism, cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, maritime security, crisis response, and regional stability. “The evolving global security landscape demands deeper collaboration between trusted partners like Nigeria and the UK,” Ribadu stated. “Together, we are tackling terrorism financing, cyber threats, disinformation, and organised crime to safeguard our citizens and promote stability.”

The United Kingdom’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, echoed this sentiment, noting Nigeria’s role as the UK’s foremost security partner in Africa. “Our collaboration includes practical support on the ground, such as British military personnel assisting Nigerian forces in Maiduguri, alongside joint efforts in counterterrorism and cybersecurity,” Powell said.

Both nations emphasised a shared commitment to upholding human rights, the rule of law, and democratic values while addressing security challenges. Recent joint initiatives have already yielded successes, including operations disrupting cross-border scam networks.

This strengthened partnership underscores the enduring strategic alliance between Nigeria and the UK in promoting peace, security, and prosperity in the region and globally.
