The Federal Government has announced a low-key programme of activities to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026. President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address the nation in a nationwide broadcast on that day.
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation disclosed the arrangements following the inauguration of an Inter-Ministerial Committee to coordinate the anniversary. The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Senator Akume, represented at the inaugural meeting by the Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office, Mrs Bekearedebo Augusta Warrens, stated that the occasion would provide an opportunity for reflection on the contributions, sacrifices and legacies of Nigeria’s founding fathers and heroines. He added that the celebration would also allow the administration to showcase its reforms and achievements amid current socio-economic challenges.
He emphasised that activities for this year’s anniversary would remain low-key and urged committee members to work with urgency given the limited time before October 1.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee comprises relevant ministers, the National Security Adviser, presidential advisers, permanent secretaries and heads of security agencies. The committee is mandated to plan and execute the approved activities and ensure the successful implementation of the anniversary programme.
