Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate and prominent advocate for good governance in Nigeria, today held a productive meeting with the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Patrick Felix Egloff, to explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation focused on sustainable development.
During the cordial discussions, Mr. Obi emphasized the need for deeper partnerships in key sectors including trade, investment, skills acquisition, vocational training, agriculture, health, education, and innovation. He highlighted Switzerland’s renowned expertise in precision industries, financial services, and sustainable development models as critical assets that could support Nigeria’s economic diversification and youth empowerment efforts.
“Switzerland has consistently demonstrated a commitment to impactful partnerships across Africa. I called for stronger development cooperation that prioritizes job creation, technology transfer, and inclusive growth to address Nigeria’s challenges in poverty reduction, security, and human capital development,” Obi stated.
The meeting underscored opportunities for collaboration in areas such as vocational education leveraging Swiss models to equip Nigerian youth with marketable skills as well as support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), climate resilience, and humanitarian initiatives in vulnerable regions. Both sides expressed optimism about expanding trade ties, potentially aligning with frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Mr. Obi commended Switzerland’s ongoing contributions to Nigeria’s development, including support for humanitarian responses in the Northeast and initiatives promoting localization and local capacity building. He reiterated that strategic international partnerships, grounded in transparency, accountability, and mutual benefit, are essential for building a New Nigeria that is productive, secure, and prosperous.
The Swiss Envoy appreciated Obi’s insights and reaffirmed Switzerland’s interest in strengthening ties with Nigeria, noting shared values in innovation, stability, and sustainable progress.
