President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that Nigeria’s economy has recovered and that the nation has been steered away from the threat of bankruptcy and the “dark tunnel of uncertainty” it faced at the start of his administration.

Speaking on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, while receiving the leadership of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House in Abuja, the President stated: “I can tell you categorically with sincerity that the country has been placed on a sound footing. The economy has recovered. The alarm for bankruptcy and dark tunnel of uncertainty that we had when I came in has been changed.

The spirit of the people is lifting, and the economic turmoil that we feared is cleared. The economy has been delivered from bankruptcy. This government has stabilised, and there is prosperity on the horizon. Life is improving.”

President Tinubu noted that he inherited both the assets and liabilities of the previous administration and has worked to stabilise the economy through far-reaching reforms. He emphasised that ongoing interventions, including the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), will continue to support families and improve livelihoods.

The President also reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to restructuring security operations and institutions to achieve lasting victory over terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country. He assured the bishops that security and education remain top priorities. The meeting was led by the President of the CBCN, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso.

President Tinubu’s remarks form part of a broader narrative of economic recovery under the Renewed Hope Agenda, following reforms that include fuel subsidy removal, foreign exchange market unification, and enhanced revenue mobilisation.
