One of the teachers rescued from a 56-day ordeal in the hands of terrorists in Oyo State has shared a dramatic account of their release, stating that the kidnappers freed them before Nigerian soldiers arrived to escort the group to safety.
The teacher’s revelation comes days after security forces secured the unconditional release of dozens of pupils and teachers abducted on May 15, 2026, from schools in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The victims, including pupils from nursery, primary, and secondary schools, endured nearly two months in captivity in the Old Oyo National Park forest area.
According to the rescued teacher, the terrorists decided to release the group following intense pressure from multi-agency security operations. No ransom was paid, and there was no prisoner swap, despite the abductors’ earlier demands. The teacher emphasized that the kidnappers handed them over prior to the arrival of military personnel, who then safely transported them out of the forest.

The operation, coordinated by the Nigerian Army’s 2 Division and involving multiple agencies including the DSS, police, intelligence services, and local vigilantes (Amotekun), led to the arrest of eight suspected kidnappers and the neutralization of others. The victims were reported safe, though they are currently receiving medical and psychosocial support. Tragically, at least two individuals including a teacher lost their lives during the abduction and captivity.
