Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that Nigeria will not miss the FIFA World Cup for eight years if he is elected President in 2027.
Sowore made the bold promise while addressing supporters and stakeholders on the state of Nigerian football and national development.
He expressed deep concern over the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for consecutive World Cups in 2022 and 2026, describing the back-to-back absences as a national embarrassment that reflects deeper systemic failures in sports administration, youth development, and governance.
“Nigeria will not miss the World Cup for eight years if I become President,” Sowore stated. “Under my administration, we will completely overhaul the football system, prioritise grassroots development, ensure transparent management of the Nigeria Football Federation, and create an environment where our talented players can consistently qualify and compete at the highest level.”
The AAC flagbearer linked the country’s football struggles to broader issues of poor leadership, corruption, and lack of investment in critical sectors. He promised that a Sowore presidency would treat sports as a strategic national asset capable of uniting the country, creating jobs, and restoring national pride.
Sowore, who is contesting the 2027 presidential election, reiterated his commitment to delivering tangible results across governance, security, power, and economic empowerment, insisting that excellence in football would be one of the visible signs of a functional and progressive Nigeria.
He called on Nigerians, especially the youth, to support a new direction that prioritises competence, accountability, and long-term national interest over recycled political leadership.
