Senegal began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 1-1 draw against Mozambique in Maputo on Friday, marking the first competitive match for new head coach Patrick Vieira. Meanwhile, Nigeria overcame an early deficit to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo.
In Group J, Aston Villa striker Nicolas Jackson gave Senegal the lead in the 32nd minute with a close-range finish from a low cross by Abdallah Sima. Mozambique equalised in first-half stoppage time when Sporting CP forward Geny Catamo struck a powerful shot from outside the penalty area that found the far corner.
Senegal controlled much of the second-half possession but could not break down a resolute Mozambican defence. The fixture, originally scheduled for Senegal, was moved to Maputo because no stadium in the host nation currently meets international standards. Vieira’s side played without retired goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, veteran defender Kalidou Koulibaly and injured Sadio Mané.
In Group L, Nigeria’s Super Eagles recovered from a 16th-minute header by Ehsan Kari to secure a home victory. Debutant George Ilenikhena equalised in first-half stoppage time after controlling a through ball from Alex Iwobi. Fellow debutant Moses Usor scored the winner in the 65th minute with a solo effort after coming off the bench.
