The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, Florida. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation on Wednesday.
Marco Rubio made the statement to reporters following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
He said: “We’ve invited President Putin to the G20. We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president, but with other world leaders. We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept.”
The December gathering of leaders from the world’s major economies is set to take place at the Trump National Doral golf club in Miami. The invitation marks an effort by the Trump administration to reintegrate Russia into global diplomatic frameworks amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Marco Rubio noted that President Donald Trump remains open to engagement. He stated that in order to solve problems, one must meet with people with whom one may disagree.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet issued a public response to the invitation. Vladimir Putin has not attended an in-person G20 summit since 2019.
President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin last met in person in Alaska in August 2025. The two leaders have spoken by telephone on numerous occasions.
