The Government of Cameroon has officially announced its plans to establish emergency shelters across the country in response to the escalating humanitarian crises affecting millions of citizens. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief and support to those displaced by ongoing conflicts and natural disasters.
With nine out of ten regions in Cameroon currently grappling with severe humanitarian challenges, including the Lake Chad basin conflict and the North-West and South-West crises, the need for urgent action has never been more critical. The establishment of emergency shelters is a proactive measure to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
Shelters will be strategically located in regions most affected by displacement, ensuring accessibility for those in need.
The government plans to construct shelters that can accommodate thousands of individuals, providing essential services such as food, healthcare, and psychosocial support.
This initiative will be implemented in partnership with humanitarian organizations, local NGOs, and community leaders to ensure a comprehensive response tailored to the specific needs of affected communities.
The construction of these shelters is set to begin immediately, with a goal to have them operational within the next three months.
“The establishment of emergency shelters is a vital step in our commitment to protect our citizens during these challenging times,” said Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji. “We are dedicated to working alongside our partners to provide immediate relief and support to those who have lost their homes.”
Cameroon is currently facing complex humanitarian crises that have led to widespread displacement. According to recent reports from international humanitarian organizations, over 4 million people are in need of assistance, with many lacking basic necessities such as food, clean water, and shelter.
The government’s commitment to establishing emergency shelters reflects its dedication to addressing these urgent needs while fostering resilience within affected communities. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance humanitarian response efforts and ensure that no one is left behind.
