Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar met with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other PDP governors in Benin City, Edo State, ahead of the upcoming governorship election. However, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State was noticeably absent from the rally.
The meeting, which took place on Friday, September 14, was part of the PDP's grand finale campaign for the Edo state governorship election scheduled for Saturday, September 21. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, chairman of the PDP Governors' Forum, led the governors in attendance.
This comes amid a recent outburst by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who said he would never support Fubara in his political life, citing concerns about the treatment of those who worked for his successor in Rivers State. However, Wike maintained a neutral stance in the upcoming Edo election.
The PDP has brought out its big guns, including Atiku and Governor Fubara, for the grand finale rally in Oredo Local Government Area. The party is pulling out all the stops to ensure victory for its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who is vying to succeed incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The Edo State Governorship election is scheduled for September 21, 2024. The PDP is urging supporters to join the rally in Oredo, Benin City, to "make history and march towards victory".
