In a significant move to enhance transportation infrastructure in Abia State, Governor Dr. Alex Otti has officially directed the expansion of roads surrounding the newly commissioned Umuahia Mega Bus Terminal. This initiative aims to improve traffic flow and accessibility to the terminal, which is set to become a central hub for intercity and intracity transportation.
During a recent inspection of the project site, Governor Otti emphasized the critical role that efficient road networks play in facilitating economic activities and ensuring a seamless travel experience for commuters. He stated, “The expansion of these roads is essential for the operational efficiency of the Umuahia Mega Bus Terminal. We are committed to providing our citizens with modern infrastructure that meets their transportation needs.”
The road expansion project will involve upgrading existing roadways to accommodate increased traffic volumes expected with the terminal's operation. The plans include constructing additional lanes, implementing effective drainage systems, and ensuring pedestrian safety through designated walkways.
Governor Otti highlighted that this project aligns with his administration’s broader agenda of revitalizing Abia State’s infrastructure. “As we continue to build and modernize our state, it is imperative that we also focus on the roads leading to our major facilities. This expansion will not only ease congestion but also enhance the overall aesthetics of Umuahia,” he added.
The Umuahia Mega Bus Terminal, which was inaugurated earlier this year, is part of a multi-billion-naira investment aimed at centralizing transportation services within the city. This terminal is expected to significantly improve public transport efficiency and contribute to the economic growth of the region by attracting more businesses and travelers.
The governor also reassured affected property owners that compensation for any necessary relocations would be handled promptly and transparently. “We understand that progress sometimes requires sacrifices, and we are committed to ensuring that all stakeholders are fairly treated during this process,” he said.
The road expansion project is set to commence immediately, with completion timelines aimed at minimizing disruption to local traffic. Governor Otti calls on residents to support the initiative as part of a collective effort towards building a better future for Abia State.
