In a significant political shift just three months before the governorship election scheduled for November 16, 2024, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has welcomed over 12,000 defectors from the All Progressives Congress (APC). This influx of new members was officially announced during a rally held in Ondo town on Monday.
The PDP's governorship candidate, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, who previously served as the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, expressed his enthusiasm for the new members joining the party. He urged existing PDP leaders and members to embrace these defectors and work collaboratively to secure victory in the upcoming election. "We should all work together and ensure PDP carries the day," Ajayi stated, emphasizing a united front as essential for success.
Among the prominent figures among the defectors was Mr. Adeniran Oyebade, an APC senatorial aspirant, who articulated his reasons for leaving the ruling party. "After spending over nine years in the APC and contributing significantly to its activities without any rewards, I am now ready to work for Agboola Ajayi and the PDP," Oyebade declared. He highlighted a collective desire among the defectors to restore good governance in Ondo State.
Ajayi took this opportunity to connect with the electorate, promising a government that prioritizes their needs and aspirations. "I have been a council chairman, a member of the House of Representatives, and a deputy governor. I know where the shoe pinches our people," he assured supporters.
The rally also served as a platform for Ajayi to criticize the current administration led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the APC. He pointed out widespread dissatisfaction among citizens due to alleged mismanagement and called for a change that would bring about development and prosperity.
As political campaigns intensify in Ondo State, both major parties are gearing up for what promises to be a highly competitive election. The recent wave of defections is indicative of shifting allegiances as candidates seek to consolidate support ahead of the polls.
In response to this development, Governor Aiyedatiwa has also been active in welcoming defectors from the PDP into the APC, asserting that his administration's achievements will resonate with voters on election day.
With tensions rising as both parties mobilize their bases, all eyes will be on Ondo State as it approaches this critical electoral juncture.
