Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has formally addressed a letter to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, urging immediate action to ensure the security and safety of the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State, scheduled for Saturday.
In his letter, Falana emphasized the critical need for the Nigerian Police Force to maintain law and order during the electoral process. He highlighted concerns over potential violence and electoral malpractices, which could undermine the democratic process and disenfranchise voters.
Falana’s appeal to IGP Egbetokun calls for a robust deployment of police personnel across all polling units and collation centers in Rivers State. He stressed the importance of a peaceful and transparent election, urging the police to act impartially and uphold the rule of law.
“The integrity of our electoral process is paramount. It is essential that the Nigerian Police Force provides adequate security to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner,” Falana stated.
The letter also requested that the police collaborate with other security agencies and civil society organizations to monitor the elections and prevent any form of intimidation or violence against voters and electoral officials.
Falana’s call for security assurance comes amid heightened tensions and political rivalry in Rivers State, which has historically experienced electoral violence. His proactive stance aims to safeguard the democratic rights of the citizens and ensure a credible electoral outcome.
