A leading civic advocacy group, Citizens for Transparent Governance (CTG), has publicly endorsed the recent adjustment in passport issuance fees announced by the Nigerian Immigration Service, describing it as a necessary step toward modernizing the country’s identity infrastructure and improving service delivery.
In a statement released today in Abuja, CTG emphasized that the fee hike—though understandably met with concern by some citizens—reflects the rising cost of secure document production, biometric upgrades, and digital transformation efforts aimed at reducing fraud and enhancing national security.
“We understand the financial strain many Nigerians face,” said CTG spokesperson, Amina Okonkwo. “But we must also recognize that reform comes at a cost. If we want a passport system that is efficient, secure, and globally respected, we must be willing to invest in it.”
CTG noted that the new fees are aligned with regional benchmarks and urged the government to ensure transparency in how the additional revenue is utilized. The group also called for continued public engagement and accountability in the reform process.
The group encouraged Nigerians to view the fee hike not as a burden, but as a contribution to a more functional and responsive public service system.
“Reform is never easy,” Okonkwo added. “But with public support and government accountability, we can build institutions that truly serve the people.”
