In a bold political statement that has stirred fresh momentum within Nigeria’s opposition ranks, Demola Olarewaju, Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has publicly endorsed a potential Atiku-Obi presidential ticket as the most formidable opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the Mic On Podcast, Olarewaju described the pairing of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, as a “co-presidency” model that could offer Nigerians a unique blend of experience, reformist energy, and inclusive governance. “The strongest ticket that the opposition can present is the marriage of Atiku and Obi,” Olarewaju stated, emphasizing their shared ideologies and complementary leadership styles.
The aide highlighted Atiku’s political resilience and history of backing fellow candidates, citing his support for Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 after losing the primaries. He also noted Atiku’s openness to generational transition, stating that the former Vice President is willing to step aside for a younger candidate if defeated in the primaries — but remains, for now, the opposition’s most viable contender.
Olarewaju further praised the Labour Party’s grassroots mobilization and the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national structure, suggesting that a strategic alliance between the two could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. “Combining PDP’s reach with LP’s energy could create a powerful force capable of challenging the status quo,” he said.
On youth inclusion, Olarewaju pointed to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a model, noting its commitment to reserving 35–50% of leadership positions for youths and women. He urged opposition parties to harness the potential of Gen Z and Gen Alpha voters, who are increasingly shaping Nigeria’s political discourse.
