Atiku Must Step Aside Now: Time to Become a True Statesman and Save Nigeria’s Democracy – APC Chieftain

Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has issued a passionate call for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to shelve his 2027 presidential ambition, respect the zoning convention, and embrace the role of a statesman for the greater good of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a strong appeal, Okechukwu emphasized that it is not too late for Atiku to step aside and allow the South to complete its tenure in the presidency, which would run until 2031 before power naturally rotates back to the North. He argued that persisting with the ambition, especially after breaching the zoning principle in 2022, has contributed to the destabilization of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and poses risks to Nigeria’s fledgling democracy.

“Atiku should bottle his ambition in the overall interest of the country,” Okechukwu stated. “He defended zoning during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. It is inconsistent and damaging for him to oppose the same principle now. By stepping aside, he can help strengthen our democracy rather than weaken it through endless personal ambition.”

The APC chieftain dismissed recent calls from groups like the Southern Political Progressive Amalgamation Forum (SPPAF) encouraging Atiku to strategize for victory, describing them as misguided. He appealed to Atiku to ignore such pressures and instead focus on forging a strong, constructive opposition that prioritizes national stability over individual political goals.

Okechukwu highlighted Atiku’s vast experience and contributions to Nigeria, noting that transitioning to the role of a statesman mentoring younger leaders and promoting unity would cement a more enduring legacy than another presidential run. “It is never too late to make amends and become a true elder statesman,” he added.

This call comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the APC reaffirming its commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and the continuation of power rotation principles that promote equity and national cohesion.
