The Nigerian military has escalated its investigation into an alleged coup plot targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, detaining a Managing Director of a federal agency and raiding the residence of a former governor from the South-South region.
According to multiple intelligence sources, the unnamed MD was arrested and interrogated over suspicious financial transfers allegedly linked to the coup conspiracy. Investigators believe the funds were directed to former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, who is suspected of being one of the key financiers of the plot.
Military operatives reportedly stormed Sylva’s residence in Abuja earlier this week, seizing documents and electronic devices believed to contain evidence of coordination with detained officers. The raid follows the arrest of 16 military personnel, including senior officers, who are currently being held for questioning.
A senior intelligence official stated, “We have credible information suggesting that certain individuals in strategic positions were involved in efforts to destabilize the current government. The MD’s financial records raised red flags, and we are pursuing every lead.”
The alleged plot has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political and security circles for transparency and swift justice. While no formal charges have been filed against Sylva or the MD, sources close to the investigation suggest that more arrests may follow as the probe deepens.
The Defence Headquarters has yet to issue an official statement, but insiders confirm that the operation is being handled with utmost discretion to avoid public panic.
