Delivering the keynote address at the 40th Convocation Lecture of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) urged graduating students and Nigerian youths at large to resist the temptation of shortcuts to wealth, warning that the pursuit of quick riches often leads to regret and irreversible consequences.
The lecture, titled “The Gen-Z Playbook: Navigating Work and the Real World,” emphasized the importance of cultivating a strong work ethic, self-discipline, and meaningful human relationships in an increasingly digital and fast-paced world.
“The zeal to have quick wealth always comes with consequences, which could lead to misery, regret, and irreparable damage,” Fashola cautioned.
He encouraged the graduates to leverage technology and social media positively by showcasing their talents and building networks, rather than engaging in negative or destructive online behavior. Fashola also highlighted the importance of interpersonal skills, urging young people to “interact with people more than machines.”
In alignment with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Fashola expressed optimism that the current administration is committed to creating opportunities for youth empowerment and national development.
“Have the courage to reject the idea of indulging in doing bad things,” he advised. “Your future is shaped by the choices you make today.”
The former minister’s message resonated with the audience, drawing applause for its candidness and relevance to the challenges facing Nigeria’s youth.
