The Federal Government has officially clarified that Mathematics and English Language remain compulsory subjects for all students registering for their O’Level examinations, despite recent updates to tertiary admission guidelines.

In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government emphasized that the new policy aimed at streamlining admission criteria does not exempt candidates from registering or sitting for these core subjects. The clarification comes in response to widespread misinterpretations following the announcement of reforms designed to promote inclusiveness and flexibility in university admissions.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, reiterated the importance of these subjects, stating: “English and Mathematics remain vital tools for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning. The adjustment affects only admission criteria, not the requirement to take these subjects.”

The Ministry further explained that the revised framework is intended to modernize Nigeria’s education system and align it with global best practices, ensuring that students are not unfairly denied admission due to deficiencies in non-core subjects. However, English and Mathematics will continue to serve as foundational pillars for academic and professional success.
