The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its full confidence in the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) following the circulation of unfounded rumours suggesting possible military interference in the nation’s democratic process.
In a statement released today by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, the Federal Government described the coup allegations as “baseless, mischievous, and designed to destabilize the country’s democratic order.” The government maintained that Nigeria’s democracy remains “strong, secure, and non-negotiable,” stressing that the Armed Forces remain fully committed to their constitutional role of safeguarding the nation’s unity and territorial integrity.
“The Federal Government stands firmly with the Defence Headquarters and the entire Armed Forces of Nigeria. There is no iota of truth in these rumours. We urge citizens to disregard such speculations and remain steadfast in their faith in democracy,”

The DHQ had earlier issued a strong statement dismissing the coup speculation, calling it “an attempt by unscrupulous elements to create panic, distract the military from its ongoing operations, and sow discord within the polity.” The military reiterated its loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and affirmed that it will continue to support the democratically elected government in maintaining peace and stability.
The Federal Government warned against the deliberate spread of false information on social media, noting that such actions can have far-reaching implications for national security. Authorities confirmed that security agencies have been directed to monitor and investigate the sources of the rumours with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice.
The statement called on political actors, the media, and citizens to exercise restraint, verify information before sharing, and work collectively to preserve the nation’s democratic institutions.
