The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a notable decline in food prices nationwide, citing a surge in domestic crop production as a key driver of the relief. This development comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to stabilize the economy and ease the burden of inflation on Nigerian households.

In a statement released by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, officials confirmed that recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and field reports indicate a downward trend in the prices of staple foods, including rice, maize, cassava, and tomatoes. The ministry attributed this progress to enhanced farming inputs, expanded irrigation schemes, and targeted support for smallholder farmers under the National Agricultural Growth Initiative.

“We are beginning to see the results of our strategic investments in agriculture,” said Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar. “The increase in crop yields across key regions has helped boost supply and ease pressure on food prices.”

The government also highlighted the role of climate-smart farming practices, access to improved seedlings, and mechanization programs in driving productivity. In the 2025 planting season, Nigeria recorded a 15% increase in maize output, a 12% rise in rice production, and a 10% boost in cassava yields, compared to the previous year.

Despite these gains, the government acknowledged that food inflation remains a concern, especially in urban centers. Officials pledged to continue working with state governments, private sector partners, and international donors to strengthen food systems, improve market access, and expand storage infrastructure to prevent post-harvest losses.

The Ministry also announced plans to launch a National Food Price Monitoring Dashboard, aimed at providing real-time data to consumers, traders, and policymakers.
