Rotimi Oyekanmi, former Chief Press Secretary to outgoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has firmly refuted claims that staff of the commission sang a funeral hymn during Yakubu’s departure ceremony. He clarified that the staff’s gesture was one of “farewell praise” and deep appreciation, not mourning.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Oyekanmi described the reports as “deliberate disinformation” spread by “haters masquerading as journalists,” specifically calling out Sahara Reporters for misrepresenting the event. He emphasized that the staff’s actions were a visible show of love and respect for Yakubu, who officially handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu on Tuesday.

Yakubu, appointed in 2015 and reappointed in 2020, stepped down to allow for the appointment of a new chairman. His successor, Mrs. Agbamuche Mbu, commended him for setting a high standard during his tenure.

Oyekanmi concluded, “Prof. Yakubu’s place in history is assured, no matter the lies being spread by familiar forces.”
