The House of Representatives and the Abia State House of Assembly have taken decisive steps to address the deteriorating health condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), with federal lawmakers set to debate a motion for urgent medical intervention, while Abia legislators plan a peaceful rally in Abuja.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Hon. Obi Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, raised a point of order highlighting the federal government’s silence on Kanu’s worsening health. Aguocha cited multiple medical evaluations—including one by the Nigerian Medical Association—indicating organ deficiencies and critical potassium levels, warning that Kanu is “on the verge of death.”
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, also from Abia State, intervened to assure the House that the motion would be properly presented later this week. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas acknowledged the urgency of the matter and confirmed the House’s willingness to deliberate once procedural requirements are met.
Meanwhile, the Abia State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, adopted a motion of urgent public importance calling for Kanu’s release on medical grounds. Deputy Speaker Austin Mmeregini, who moved the motion, emphasized the need for solidarity with Governor Alex Otti and South-East stakeholders advocating for Kanu’s freedom.
The Assembly announced plans for a peaceful march to Abuja, urging President Bola Tinubu to comply with court orders granting Kanu bail. Lawmakers also proposed sending a delegation to meet with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Abbas, followed by a press conference to amplify their demands.
“The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, despite valid court orders, undermines the rule of law,” said Speaker Emeruwa. “Every citizen deserves their fundamental rights. We urge the President to show mercy and grant his release.”
