Supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have issued a strong warning to former President Goodluck Jonathan over rumored plans to contest the 2027 presidential election, urging him to reconsider and avoid what they described as a “political embarrassment.” Meanwhile, prominent voices from Jonathan’s home region have condemned a recent lawsuit seeking to bar him from running, calling it politically motivated and an abuse of judicial process.
The Progressive Network for Tinubu (PNT), a pro-Tinubu group based in Ondo State, made the statement during the inauguration of its local government structures across the state. PNT Director-General, Mr. Olumide Obadele, dismissed speculation about Jonathan’s return, citing constitutional constraints and a lack of viable opposition platforms. “Jonathan’s rumored ambition is not only legally questionable but politically unwise. If he insists, he will only end up embarrassed and rubbish,” Obadele said.
Obadele further asserted that opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) are “on life support” and lack the national appeal to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He described the 2027 election as “a done deal” for President Tinubu, emphasizing the need to mobilize grassroots support and combat voter apathy.
In a parallel development, civil society organizations and community leaders from Delta State have condemned a lawsuit filed by legal practitioner Johnmary Jideobi at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit seeks a perpetual injunction to prevent Jonathan from contesting the 2027 election. Mr. Victor Ojei, Director-General of the Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, described the suit as “a politically motivated distraction and a gross abuse of judicial process,” calling for its immediate dismissal.
Ojei expressed concern over the growing trend of weaponizing the judiciary for political ends, warning that such actions undermine democratic principles and the rule of law. “Every Nigerian has the right to seek elective office, and attempts to preemptively block candidates through the courts are dangerous to our democracy,” he said.
