In a landmark development for Nigeria’s research and innovation ecosystem, the European Union has announced that Nigerian researchers are now eligible to participate in Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation programme valued at over €100 billion.
This announcement was made during the 18th Annual Research Conference at the University of Lagos, where the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, emphasized the importance of empowering Nigerian scientists, innovators, and academics to contribute to global research efforts. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration in critical areas such as digital transformation, climate resilience, renewable energy, health, and artificial intelligence.
Speaking at the event, Mignot stated: “Our partnership with Nigeria is built on shared priorities. We are committed to supporting Nigerian researchers in turning knowledge into impact.”
The Tertiary EducationFund) has also expressed readiness to support Nigerian participation in Horizon Europe through capacity-building and institutional support.
