President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu whose tenure ended earlier this month. The decision, Tinubu said, was guided by Amupitan’s apolitical stance, integrity, and distinguished record of service.
Speaking during the National Council of State meeting at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized that Amupitan is the first nominee from Kogi State to be considered for the top electoral role, describing him as a man of “unquestionable character and deep commitment to justice.” The council unanimously endorsed the nomination, paving the way for Senate screening and confirmation.
Tinubu cited Amupitan’s non-partisan background and reputation in legal and academic circles as critical factors in his selection.
Amupitan, 58, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos, currently serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). He also chairs the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria since 2014, Amupitan has authored several influential texts on corporate governance, evidence law, and company law, and has served on multiple national legal boards.
Tinubu expressed confidence that Amupitan’s leadership will strengthen INEC’s credibility and independence ahead of key elections, including the upcoming Anambra governorship poll.
Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State praised the appointment, stating that Amupitan’s career reflects “a deep commitment to justice, knowledge, and national service.” The President is expected to transmit Amupitan’s name to the Senate in accordance with constitutional provisions.
