Troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF) North East, under Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have successfully rescued 10 National Examinations Council (NECO) candidates and teachers who were abducted earlier today by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorist group.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, when the terrorists attacked the Technical Secondary School in Lassa community, Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, while students were sitting for their NECO examinations. The attackers abducted 11 victims before fleeing into the surrounding bush.

Acting swiftly on intelligence, the troops, supported by air platforms, engaged the fleeing terrorists in a gun battle around the Daggu area. The operation resulted in the successful rescue of the 10 victims, who were found unharmed. They are currently receiving necessary medical checks and psychological support. Efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue the remaining victim while pursuing the perpetrators to bring them to justice.

The Nigerian military has reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property, particularly in securing educational institutions and ensuring the safety of students and teachers in the North East region. This swift response underscores the resolve of the armed forces to degrade the capabilities of terrorist groups operating in the area.

Quotes:

“The Nigerian Army and the entire security architecture in the North East remain vigilant and proactive in countering terrorism. The rescue of these students and teachers today is a testament to our dedication to safeguarding our future generation. We will not rest until every abducted Nigerian is rescued and the terrorists are neutralized,” said a military spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai.

Parents, guardians, and the general public are urged to remain calm as operations continue, and to cooperate with security forces by providing timely intelligence.
