Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections are conducted with greater transparency, credibility, and alignment with international standards.

Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the European Union Election Observation Mission in Abuja, Abbas emphasized that the Tinubu administration is actively pursuing electoral and constitutional reforms to address concerns raised by both domestic and international observers following the 2023 elections.

“The leadership of the country under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is very committed to improving our electoral processes, particularly in response to the observations made by international observers in the 2023 election,” Abbas stated.

The National Assembly, under Tinubu’s guidance, is currently amending the Electoral Act 2022 and considering constitutional changes to enhance electoral integrity.

Abbas noted that both the Senate and House leadership have agreed to fast-track the electoral amendments as a unified legislative priority, with the goal of passing them before December 2025. These reforms will then be transmitted to state Houses of Assembly for concurrence.

“We will do all the needful legislatively to empower INEC with the tools and legal framework it needs to conduct a better election in 2027,” Abbas added.

The EU delegation, led by Member of Parliament Barry Andrews, commended the National Assembly’s proactive approach and pledged support in advocacy and public awareness efforts. Other members of the delegation included EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot and several election experts.

The 2023 general elections, Nigeria’s seventh since the return to democracy in 1999, were marred by logistical challenges and technical glitches. The Tinubu administration’s reform agenda aims to restore public confidence and strengthen democratic institutions ahead of the next electoral cycle.
