Widespread strikes swept across Belgium today as unions and workers voiced strong opposition to the government’s proposed austerity measures and structural reforms. Public transport, schools, and key industries experienced significant disruptions, with thousands of workers taking to the streets in protest.

The government’s reform package, aimed at reducing public spending and restructuring social welfare programs, has sparked fierce debate. Officials argue that the measures are necessary to stabilize the economy and ensure long-term fiscal sustainability. However, unions contend that the reforms unfairly burden working families, erode social protections, and widen inequality.

Major cities including Brussels, Antwerp, and Liège saw demonstrations that drew large crowds, with union leaders calling for solidarity against what they describe as “unjust sacrifices.” Train services were halted, flights delayed, and public offices closed as workers across sectors joined the strike.

Prime Minister representatives acknowledged the disruption but emphasized the importance of moving forward with reforms to safeguard Belgium’s financial future. “We understand the concerns, but these changes are essential to maintain competitiveness and secure jobs in the long run,” a government spokesperson stated.

Union leaders have vowed to continue mobilizing until the government reconsiders its proposals. Talks between officials and labor representatives are expected to resume later this week, though tensions remain high.

The strikes mark one of the largest coordinated labor actions in Belgium in recent years, underscoring the deep divisions over how to balance fiscal responsibility with social equity.
