The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has departed Guinea-Bissau following a military coup in the West African nation. Jonathan, who led the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission, monitored the recent presidential and legislative elections there.
The coup unfolded on November 26, 2025, with soldiers seizing control, closing borders, and suspending the constitution. Amid the unrest, Jonathan and his delegation, including former ECOWAS Commission President Mohamed Ibn Chambas, remained secure. He left the country on a special flight and arrived in Abidjan, en route to Nigeria.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa stated, “Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and is on his way to Nigeria.” The government strongly condemns the coup and urges a return to constitutional order.
This assurance addresses concerns raised after initial reports of Jonathan being trapped in his hotel during the takeover. The FG emphasizes its commitment to the safety of Nigerian citizens abroad and regional stability.
