Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has firmly rejected recent allegations suggesting that genocide is taking place within the state.

Speaking at a public forum, Governor Alia emphasized that while Benue continues to grapple with serious security challenges, these issues must not be misrepresented as the deliberate extermination of any group.

Governor Alia, who is also a Catholic priest, underscored that his moral and spiritual obligations guide his leadership. He stated that his administration is committed to truth, justice, and the protection of all residents of Benue, regardless of ethnicity or religion. “In my state of Benue, we do not have any religious, ethnic, racial, national, or state genocide. Do we have insecurity? Yes, we do. But it is not genocide,” he said.

The governor urged critics and commentators to rely on internationally recognized definitions of genocide, particularly those outlined by the United Nations, rather than framing the state’s security challenges in misleading terms.

He explained that the violence and displacement witnessed in Benue stem from long-standing conflicts, including farmer-herder clashes, which have escalated over time but do not amount to genocide.

Governor Alia also highlighted his administration’s ongoing efforts to address insecurity, support internally displaced persons, and restore peace across affected communities.

He reiterated that his government is working closely with security agencies, humanitarian organizations, and community leaders to ensure that the rights and safety of all citizens are protected.

Governor Alia called for unity and responsible dialogue, stressing that sensational claims of genocide only serve to deepen divisions and hinder collective efforts to resolve the state’s challenges.

He reaffirmed his dedication to governance rooted in compassion, faith, and humanity, assuring the people of Benue that his administration remains focused on building a safer and more inclusive society.
