The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued an urgent appeal for international assistance as a massive wildfire continues to devastate parts of the Hyrcanian Forests, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient biodiversity and ecological significance.
The fire, which began in late October in Mazandaran Province, has spread rapidly due to dry weather conditions and strong winds, overwhelming local firefighting resources. Despite extensive efforts by Iranian emergency services, the blaze reignited in mid-November and has since consumed large areas of the forest.
Deputy Presidential aide Mohammad Jafar Qaempanah confirmed that Iran has formally requested support from friendly nations to help contain the disaster. Shina Ansari, head of Iran’s Environment Department, announced that Turkey has already pledged assistance, sending two water bombers, a helicopter, and a team of experts to aid in firefighting operations.
The Hyrcanian Forests, stretching along the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, are estimated to be between 25 and 50 million years old and host thousands of plant species. Their destruction would represent a profound loss to global biodiversity and cultural heritage.
Iranian authorities emphasized that the preservation of these forests is not only a national priority but a global responsibility. They are seeking urgent support in the form of aerial firefighting equipment, specialized teams, and technical expertise to prevent further damage and to begin long-term ecological restoration once the fires are contained.
The government reiterated its commitment to protecting the Hyrcanian Forests and called on the international community to act swiftly in solidarity to safeguard this irreplaceable ecosystem.
