The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) today announced the launch of a new counterterrorism operation in the northern West Bank, marking a significant escalation in ongoing security efforts in the region. The military confirmed that the operation is being conducted in cooperation with Israel’s internal security service and is focused on areas of northern Samaria, a term used by Israel to describe part of the West Bank.
According to the IDF, the initiative is a broad campaign aimed at dismantling militant networks and preventing further attacks against Israeli civilians and security personnel. Officials emphasized that this operation is distinct from earlier campaigns, including the “Iron Wall” operation launched earlier in 2025, which displaced tens of thousands of residents in the Palestinian territory. The army clarified that the current mission is newly initiated and not a continuation of prior counterterrorism measures.
Violence in the West Bank has surged since the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. Despite a fragile truce in Gaza since October 10, 2025, clashes and unrest have continued in the West Bank, particularly in refugee camps such as Nur Shams and Jenin. The IDF stated that the northern West Bank has become a focal point for militant activity, necessitating decisive action to restore security.
Military spokespersons noted that the operation involves coordinated raids, arrests, and intelligence-led actions targeting armed groups. While details of troop deployments and specific objectives were not disclosed, the IDF underscored its commitment to minimizing harm to civilians while pursuing what it described as “terrorist infrastructure.”
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions and international concern over displacement and settler violence in the West Bank. Human rights organizations have reported that thousands of Palestinians have been forced from their homes in recent months, raising questions about the humanitarian impact of Israel’s military policies.
Israeli officials reiterated that the operation is necessary to safeguard national security and protect communities from escalating threats. The government has pledged to continue monitoring developments closely and provide updates as the situation evolves.
