Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on the United States government to prioritize technological support over military threats in its engagement with Nigeria. His remarks were made in response to recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested possible military intervention in Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook page, Kwankwaso expressed concern over what he described as “escalating pronouncements” from the American president, warning that such rhetoric could undermine diplomatic relations and destabilize regional efforts to combat terrorism.
“Nigeria is a sovereign nation facing complex security challenges. What we need from our partners is support through advanced technology, intelligence sharing, and capacity building — not threats of military action,” Kwankwaso stated.
Kwankwaso emphasized that Nigeria’s fight against terrorism requires modern surveillance tools, cybersecurity infrastructure, and training for security personnel. He urged the United States to assist Nigeria in acquiring these resources rather than resorting to coercive measures.
He also highlighted the importance of mutual respect in international relations, stating that collaboration rooted in shared values and strategic interests would yield better outcomes than unilateral threats.
President Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” and hinted at the possibility of deploying ground troops or conducting air strikes in response to what he described as “Christian genocide.” The comments have sparked widespread debate and drawn criticism from Nigerian leaders and civil society groups.
Kwankwaso joined other voices in rejecting the notion of foreign military intervention, warning that such actions could inflame tensions and violate Nigeria’s sovereignty.
In his statement, Kwankwaso also called for stronger cooperation among African nations to address terrorism and religious extremism. He proposed the creation of a regional security framework supported by international partners, including the United States, to enhance intelligence coordination and border security.
He reiterated that Nigeria remains committed to protecting all citizens regardless of religious affiliation, and that the government must be supported in its efforts to maintain peace and stability.
Senator Kwankwaso’s appeal underscores the need for diplomacy, innovation, and strategic partnerships in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges. His call for technological assistance over military threats reflects a growing sentiment among Nigerian leaders who seek solutions that respect national sovereignty and promote long-term stability.
