Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim admitted his side “deserved to lose” following their 1-0 defeat to Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night. Despite playing against 10 men for over an hour after Idrissa Gana Gueye was sent off in the 13th minute, United failed to capitalize and were undone by a first-half strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Amorim expressed disappointment with his team’s lack of intensity and failure to impose themselves on the game. “They were the better team with 11 players or 10. I felt from the first minute that we were not there with the same intensity, so they deserved the win,” he said in his post-match remarks.
The Portuguese coach highlighted that United did not make the most of their numerical advantage, allowing Everton to dictate key moments of the match. “The way we faced the game was not good enough. The other team helped us with a sending off, but we did not take advantage. What we do in every single moment of the game is crucial, and today we failed to deliver,” Amorim added.
The defeat leaves Manchester United in 10th place on 18 points, level with Everton, who now sit just behind them in 11th. The result has intensified scrutiny on Amorim’s tenure, with fans and pundits questioning the team’s direction and consistency.
Everton manager David Moyes praised his side’s resilience, noting that the Toffees showed determination and discipline despite being a man down. The victory marks a significant boost for Everton, who continue to climb the Premier League table after a challenging start to the season.
Manchester United will now look to regroup ahead of their next fixture, with Amorim acknowledging that improvements must be made quickly. “We have a lot to do. We must understand the important moments of the game and show the right intensity. Without that, we cannot compete at the level expected of Manchester United,” he concluded.
