Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu formally requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog today. He cited the ongoing corruption trial as a hindrance to effective governance during critical national challenges. Netanyahu emphasized that ending the proceedings serves Israel's public interest, while he maintains his innocence and expects full acquittal.

The request follows years of legal battles. Prosecutors charged Netanyahu with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three separate cases. These allegations involve favors to media tycoons for positive coverage and accepting lavish gifts from wealthy donors.

The trial, which began in 2020, requires Netanyahu to testify three times weekly, conflicting with his duties amid security threats and diplomatic opportunities.

In a video statement, Netanyahu claimed evidence shows "serious crimes" in the case against him, without providing details. He argued that national unity demands resolution now. "Israel faces enormous challenges and great opportunities," Netanyahu stated. "To repel threats and realize opportunities, we need focus and strength."

The move drew sharp reactions. Opposition leaders criticized it as undermining democracy and the rule of law. They insist any pardon requires admission of guilt. President Herzog described the request as "extraordinary" with significant implications. He pledged a thorough review, consulting legal experts.

This development comes weeks after the U.S. President Donald Trump urged Herzog to pardon Netanyahu in a letter, highlighting the need for stability. The president's office confirmed receipt and promised careful consideration.
