Segun Awolowo, Grandson of Obafemi Awolowo, Dies at 62

The Awolowo family has announced the passing of Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of Nigeria’s revered nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Segun Awolowo died at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy of public service and devotion to family.  






In a statement released on Thursday, the family described him as a phenomenal husband, father, and grandfather, who remained the anchor of their home and a loyal servant of Nigeria. “With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo,” the statement read. “He was wise, steady, endlessly loving, and dedicated his life to serving his country with vision, integrity, passion, and commitment.”  





Segun Awolowo served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), where he championed initiatives to strengthen Nigeria’s non-oil exports and promote economic diversification. His leadership was widely recognized for advancing Nigeria’s trade agenda and supporting local entrepreneurs.  






Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mourning his death and describing him as a “fiercely loyal servant to Nigeria” who lived every day with humility and a generous spirit. Political leaders, business communities, and civil society groups have also expressed condolences, highlighting his contributions to national development and his unwavering commitment to the ideals of service and integrity.  







Segun Awolowo’s passing marks a significant loss not only to the Awolowo family but also to Nigeria at large. His life embodied the values of patriotism, faith, and dedication to the common good, continuing the legacy of his grandfather, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
