The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) wishes to clarify the
facts surrounding the incident involving local vigilante members and Nigerien troops at Mazanya
village in Jibia Local Government Area, Katsina State, which occurred on 29
November 2025 at approximately 1500 hours.
Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General
Michael Onoja, said the statement aims to dispel any
misconceptions and reaffirm DHQ commitment to border security and regional
cooperation with
the Republic of Niger, and preventing similar misunderstandings in the future.
According to Major General Michael Onoja, a convoy
comprising four gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep carrying Nigerien military
personnel entered Mazanya to collect water, a routine activity historically
carried out by Nigerien troops.
However, the unusually large convoy raised concern among local
vigilantes, who misinterpreted the movement as a
potential threat and initiated gunfire.
In the aftermath, both sides emphasized the need for
better communication. The Nigerien commander agreed to enhanced protocols,
including prior notifications for large troop movements or high-level visits,
to avoid similar incidents. The troops proceeded to collect water and returned
to their side of the border without further issues.
To bolster cross-border ties, the DHQ hosted a Joint
Border Security Meeting on Monday, December 1, 2025, focusing on improved
liaison mechanisms. "In line with the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment
to peaceful and cooperative relations with neighbouring countries, the meeting
aimed to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents,” Major General Onoja
stated.
Nigeria and Niger share deep cultural, economic, and
security connections, collaborating against common threats like terrorism,
smuggling, and illegal migration. The DHQ reiterated its dedication to peaceful
coexistence and mutual respect, assuring that lessons from the incident are
being taken seriously, with concrete measures already underway to prevent similar
misunderstandings in the future.
Residents of Mazanya and surrounding border communities
were urged to stay calm and vigilant while resuming normal activities.
"The situation is fully under control, and both Nigerian and Nigerien
authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety of
civilians along the border," Major General Onoja concluded.
