The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a historic defense procurement deal valued at approximately €1.2 billion, marking the largest military aircraft acquisition in West Africa to date.

This strategic investment includes the purchase of 24 M-346FA light fighter aircraft from Italian aerospace manufacturer Leonardo S.p.A., aimed at enhancing the Nigerian Air Force's capabilities in combating insurgency, securing borders, and addressing regional security challenges.

The agreement, which also encompasses 10 AW-109 Trekker light helicopters, includes comprehensive long-term maintenance, training, and logistical support provisions to ensure operational readiness and sustainability.

Deliveries are expected to commence in phases, with the full fleet anticipated to be integrated into service over the next two years, representing a significant milestone in Nigeria-Italy defense cooperation.

"This acquisition underscores our commitment to modernizing the Nigerian Armed Forces and equipping them with advanced technology to protect our sovereignty and promote peace in the region," said a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence. "By investing in these versatile, multi-role aircraft, we are not only bolstering our air power but also fostering international partnerships that align with our national security objectives."

The M-346FA jets are renowned for their agility, advanced avionics, and dual-role functionality as both trainers and light attack aircraft, making them ideal for Nigeria's diverse operational needs, including counter-insurgency operations and maritime surveillance. This deal follows extensive evaluations and aligns with Nigeria's broader defense modernization strategy amid evolving security threats in West Africa.

The Federal Government assures that this procurement adheres to transparent processes and international standards, with funds allocated through approved budgetary channels to maximize value for the Nigerian people.
