Former Chief Justice of Nigeria Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad Passes Away at 71

The Nigerian judiciary mourns the loss of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad. He served as Chief Justice and died in a Saudi Arabian hospital. Authorities confirmed his passing in the early hours of Tuesday.






Justice Muhammad entered the world on December 31, 1953, in Bauchi State. He built a distinguished career in law. He earned degrees in Islamic law from Ahmadu Bello University. Officials called him to the bar in 1981. He advanced through judicial roles. He worked as a magistrate and judge in Sharia courts. In 1993, he joined the Court of Appeal. Then, in 2006, he ascended to the Supreme Court.






President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him Chief Justice in 2019. He led the judiciary until his resignation in June 2022 due to health concerns. "Justice Muhammad dedicated his life to upholding justice and the rule of law," a spokesperson for the Supreme Court stated. "His contributions shaped Nigeria's legal landscape profoundly."







The government received the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger award in 2022. Many remember him for his integrity and mentorship. Officials have not disclosed the exact cause of death. He sought medical treatment in Saudi Arabia at the time.
