Armed assailants attacked the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, Kogi State, on December 14, 2025. The gunmen stormed the church during a Sunday worship service, firing shots indiscriminately. They kidnapped over 20 congregants and fled the scene. One worshipper, identified as Jayjay, died during the assault.
Related attacks struck nearby communities, including Oke-Agi and Ilai, resulting in three additional deaths and more abductions. In total, authorities report at least four fatalities and up to 30 people taken captive across the areas. Local officials, including Kabba/Bunu Chairman Zaccheus Dare Micheal, confirmed the incidents and criticized the church for holding services amid rising tensions. Security forces responded, but residents noted delays in their arrival.
This brazen assault underscores the growing insecurity in Nigeria's Middle Belt region. No group has claimed responsibility, but such attacks often target religious gatherings and rural populations. Human rights groups call for immediate action to rescue the victims and protect vulnerable communities.
"These kidnappings represent a direct assault on religious freedom and civilian safety," said Corinne Dufka, Sahel Director at Human Rights Watch. "Nigerian authorities must prioritize investigations, hold perpetrators accountable, and enhance security measures to prevent further tragedies."
